Talk to the app

The settings page is a conversation.

Chat isn't a side feature bolted onto Talavine — it's the steering wheel. Type what you want and the app does it: files the newsletters, changes its own settings, sets up the morning briefing. And when you don't like what it did, ask why. It answers from the actual record of that decision, not a canned help page.

The problem it solves

Normal software makes you hunt through menus to change anything, and when it does something confusing — buries a message, misfiles a sender — it can't tell you why. The behavior is a black box with a settings page in front of it.

Why this is different

Talavine's chat drives the same controls you'd find in the UI. Asking it to act creates real rules and real settings changes you can inspect afterward, every action lands in a visible activity log with undo, and "why did you do that?" is answered from the decision record the app kept when it acted.

When to use it

You need this when...

Changing how the app behaves without hunting through settings.
Understanding why a message was filed, flagged, or screened out.
Turning a one-off request into a standing rule by saying so.
Learning what the app can do by asking it, mid-task.
Real examples

Here's exactly how it works.

Each example starts with a situation you've probably been in, and ends with the answer and where it came from.

Act by asking

Situation
A newsletter you never read keeps landing on top of real mail.
You do
Type: "I don't need these — file them from now on."
Talavine does
Files the backlog, creates a sender rule you can inspect, and says what it did.
Output
A cleaner inbox plus a visible, editable rule — and an undo if you change your mind.

Ask it why

Situation
A message from a real person ended up in Screened Out.
You do
Ask: "Why did this land in Screened Out?"
Talavine does
Answers from the decision record for that exact message — the signals it used and the rule or judgment involved.
Output
A plain-language explanation, and a one-line correction that fixes the pattern going forward.

Configure by asking

Situation
You want the morning briefing on your phone before the day starts.
You do
Type: "Send my briefing to Telegram at 7."
Talavine does
Walks the real settings — briefing schedule, phone bridge — and confirms exactly what changed.
Output
The behavior you asked for, plus a settings change you can see and revert in the UI.
How to use it

Typical workflow

  1. Open chat anywhere in the app and say what you want in normal language.
  2. Review what it proposes to change — it tells you before it flips anything consequential.
  3. Ask "why did you do that?" or "how does this work?" whenever something surprises you.
  4. Correct it in the same conversation; the correction sticks.
How it works

Behind the scenes

  1. Chat requests map to the same rules, policies, and settings the UI exposes — not a separate macro layer.
  2. Every action is written to the activity log with what changed and why, so it can be reviewed and undone.
  3. Explanations are built from the app's own decision records for the specific message or action you're asking about.
  4. Consequential actions still pass through the same approval gates as everything else.
What you get out

The result is something you can actually use.
